Bad news for university graduates

In recent news it was announced that the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency will go from having 900 staff to 600. This is expected to be the begining of cut backs intended to bring the Federal Government budget into surplus. At the State level the news is equally as depressing, the new Government will be reducing staff and not replace many staff who leave their current positions. Having applied for a graduate position in the department of Climate Change myself I wonder if this was a complete waste of time as I would imagine their graduate intact if they have one will be very small.

Of course this should make spare a thought for our American and European friends who after finishing their studies will mostly enter the ranks of the unemployed. In this country most graduates should be able to find decent work in the private sector even if its not their ideal position. The situation in other develop nations since the global financial crisis is far more bleak with high levels of unemployment and tight competition for any graduates positions leading to significant under employment.
